Over the last five years, oncology has continued to dominate specialty healthcare growth and the demands placed on oncology sales teams have evolved just as quickly. Oncology continues to be one of the fastest-growing areas in specialty pharmacy, making up 40% of specialty drug spending in the U.S. At the same time, hundreds of new cancer therapies are currently being developed, including immunotherapy, targeted treatments, and personalized medicine options.. As more therapies enter the market, providers are navigating increasingly complex treatment pathways, reimbursement requirements, and operational pressures, creating a much more strategic environment for oncology sales professionals than ever before.
At the same time, oncology care delivery has shifted significantly toward outpatient and community-based settings. Industry projections continue to show strong growth in outpatient infusion and community oncology services as health systems work to improve access, reduce costs, and move care closer to patients. With this shift has come a more complex provider landscape involving integrated delivery networks, specialty pharmacies, infusion centers, GPOs, and multiple layers of decision-makers. Oncology sales professionals today are expected to navigate far more than physician relationships alone. They are often engaging with clinical teams, pharmacy leadership, reimbursement departments, administrators, and operational stakeholders to support both access and long-term growth.
Another major evolution has been the increasing importance of reimbursement and patient access conversations. Studies continue to show that up to 25–30% of oncology patients experience delays in starting treatment due to prior authorizations, coverage challenges, or financial barriers (American Medical Association). Because of this, providers are looking for partners who understand the realities of buy-and-bill models, payer management, specialty distribution, and financial assistance resources. Oncology sales professionals are now playing a much larger role in helping practices navigate operational barriers and improve the patient journey from prescription to therapy initiation.
We’ve also seen a major shift toward more data-driven territory management and cross-functional collaboration across oncology organizations. Sales teams are increasingly using referral analytics, utilization trends, EMR insights, and market data to guide territory strategy and identify growth opportunities. At the same time, collaboration between sales, market access, reimbursement, operations, specialty pharmacy, and clinical teams has become essential to supporting patient care and maintaining provider relationships. At The Remedy Group, we continue to see organizations prioritize oncology professionals who can balance strategic thinking, relationship-building, operational awareness, and patient access expertise as the industry continues to evolve.
