Beyond Sunscreen: The Future of Skin Cancer Treatment
July is UV Safety Awareness Month, and while sun protection remains one of the most effective ways to reduce skin cancer risk, the conversation doesn’t stop with prevention.
Over the last several years, oncology has entered one of its most innovative periods yet. Researchers, pharmaceutical companies, and healthcare providers are redefining how skin cancer is diagnosed, monitored, and treated and many of these advances are already changing patient outcomes.
Skin Cancer by the Numbers
Skin cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, with more than 5 million cases treated each year. Approximately 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime, making early detection and continued innovation more important than ever.
Precision Medicine Is Personalizing Treatment
Cancer treatment is moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach.
Today, physicians can increasingly use genomic testing and biomarker analysis to better understand an individual’s tumor and select therapies that are more likely to be effective. This personalized approach helps reduce unnecessary treatments while improving outcomes for many patients.
Genomic testing looks at the genetic changes, or mutations, within a patient’s cancer cells. By identifying these changes, doctors can better understand what is driving the cancer and determine whether certain targeted treatments may be effective.
Biomarker analysis involves testing a tumor or blood sample for specific proteins, genes, or other biological markers that provide clues about how a cancer is likely to behave and how it may respond to different therapies.
As precision medicine continues to evolve, targeted therapies are becoming a larger part of the oncology landscape across melanoma and other solid tumors.
Immunotherapy Continues to Expand
One of the biggest shifts in oncology has been the rapid growth of immunotherapy.
Rather than attacking cancer directly, these treatments help activate a patient’s own immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells.
Researchers continue to expand the use of checkpoint inhibitors, while newer approaches, including bispecific antibodies that connect immune cells directly to tumors are creating additional treatment possibilities for patients with difficult-to-treat cancers. By the end of 2025, 13 bispecific antibodies had received approval across oncology indications, and research continues to accelerate.
Cell Therapy Is Opening New Doors
One of the most exciting developments in melanoma has been the emergence of tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy.
Unlike traditional treatments, TIL therapy uses a patient’s own immune cells, collected from their tumor, expanded in a laboratory, and then infused back into the patient to strengthen the body’s immune response against cancer. It represents an entirely new treatment approach for some patients with advanced melanoma.
Artificial Intelligence Is Improving Earlier Detection
Innovation isn’t limited to medications.
AI is becoming an increasingly valuable tool in dermatology by helping clinicians identify suspicious skin lesions earlier and prioritize patients who need additional evaluation.
Researchers are also developing advanced imaging technologies that combine AI with multispectral imaging to improve diagnostic accuracy, with the goal of detecting melanoma at earlier stages when treatment is most effective.
